CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS
Before you dive into your construction project using Sikadur®-31 CF Normal, it’s essential to follow precise guidelines to ensure a successful outcome. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to use this remarkable adhesive and repair mortar:

1. SUBSTRATE QUALITY
- Substrate Age: Ensure that the concrete and mortar substrates are older than 28 days, depending on the minimal requirement of strengths.
- Strength Verification: Verify the strength of the substrate (concrete, masonry, natural stone) to ensure it meets the necessary standards.
- Surface Condition: The substrate surface, regardless of type, must be clean, dry, or mat damp (no standing water). It should be free from contaminants such as dirt, oil, grease, existing surface treatments, coatings, and other foreign materials.
- Steel Substrates: If working with steel substrates, make sure they are de-rusted to the Sa 2.5 standard.
- Loose Particles Removal: Ensure the substrate is sound, and remove any loose particles or friable material to create a laitance and contaminant-free, open-textured surface.
2. SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
- For concrete, mortar, stone, and bricks:
- Substrates must be sound, dry or mat damp (no standing water), clean, and free from laitance, ice, standing water, grease, oils, old surface treatments, or coatings.
- Remove all loose or friable particles to achieve an open-textured surface.
- For steel substrates:
- Clean and prepare thoroughly, ensuring the quality meets acceptable standards (e.g., by blast cleaning and vacuuming).
- Avoid dew point conditions during the preparation process.
3. MIXING
- Pre-batched Units: When working with pre-batched units, follow these steps for proper mixing:
- Mix components A and B together for at least 3 minutes using a slow-speed electric drill (max. 300 rpm) until the material becomes smooth and attains a uniform gray color.
- Avoid introducing air while mixing.
- Pour the entire mix into a clean container and stir for approximately 1 additional minute at low speed to minimize air entrapment.
- Only mix the quantity that can be used within the product’s pot life.
4. APPLICATION METHOD / TOOLS
- Thin Layer Adhesive Application:
- Apply the mixed Sikadur®-31 CF Normal to the prepared surface using a spatula, trowel, notched trowel, or, for hands-on application, use gloves for protection.
- Repair Mortar Application:
- If using Sikadur®-31 CF Normal as a repair mortar, you may need to employ formwork for shaping and containment.
- Bonding Metal Profiles:
- When bonding metal profiles onto vertical surfaces, ensure even support and apply pressure uniformly using props.
- Maintain the pressure for at least 12 hours, depending on the thickness applied (not exceeding 5 mm) and the room temperature.
- After the adhesive hardens, check the adhesion quality by tapping it gently with a hammer.
5. CLEANING OF EQUIPMENT
- Clean all tools and application equipment promptly after use with Sika® Colma Cleaner. Remember that hardened or cured material can only be removed mechanically.
By following these comprehensive construction instructions, you can make the most of Sikadur®-31 CF Normal’s exceptional properties. This adhesive and repair mortar is designed for high-performance applications, and proper adherence to these guidelines will help ensure your construction project’s success.
