CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS
Ensuring the proper installation of SikaSwell S-2 is essential for achieving effective and long-lasting results. Follow these detailed construction instructions to ensure a successful application:
1. PREPARE THE SUBSTRATE:
- Before applying SikaSwell S-2, the substrate must be sound, clean, and free from all surface contaminants.
- For existing concrete, remove any loose particles, release agents, laitance, paint, rust, and other materials that may not adhere well.
- Freshly cast concrete should be compacted thoroughly to ensure a dense surface without any honeycombing or voids.
- In cases where the concrete surface is excessively rough, it’s recommended to smooth the surface with a batten or a similar tool in the areas where the sealant will be applied.
2. APPLICATION METHOD / TOOLS:
- Sealant Application:
- Apply SikaSwell S-2 in a narrow bed with a size of approximately 5 mm onto the prepared substrate.
- Extrude a sufficient quantity to level the roughness of the substrate effectively.
- Profiles and Injection Hoses:
- For profiles (SikaSwell-A and SikaSwell-P) and SikaFuko Swell 1 Injection Hoses, press them into the freshly applied SikaSwell S-2 until a small quantity extrudes from both sides of the profile or hose, ensuring a full surface bond.
- Profiles must be placed within a maximum of 30 minutes.
- Allow SikaSwell S-2 to harden for 2-3 hours before placing concrete.
- Protect the SikaSwell S-2 profiles against water, such as rain, until the concrete is placed.
3. BURIED SEALANT FOR CONSTRUCTION JOINTS:
- Use a triangular nozzle or cut the nozzle to achieve a regular triangular extrusion section.
- Apply SikaSwell S-2 according to the following guidelines based on the structure thickness:
- For structures less than 30 cm thick, use a 15 mm triangular section.
- For structures between 30-50 cm thick, use a 20 mm triangular section.
- Place SikaSwell S-2 in the center of the concrete section.
- Protect the SikaSwell S-2 against water, such as rain, until the concrete is placed.
4. CLEANING OF EQUIPMENT:
- After use, clean all tools and application equipment immediately with Sika Colma-Cleaner.
- Any hardened material can only be removed through mechanical means.
5. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
- Ensure a full and continuous contact between the SikaSwell S-2 profiles and the substrate is achieved.
- The minimum cover on both sides of the sealant should be 10 cm for reinforced concrete and 15 cm for unreinforced concrete.
- For pouring heights less than 50 cm, allow the sealant to harden for 2-3 hours before further construction. If the pouring height is greater than 50 cm, the SikaSwell S-2 must harden for at least 2 days.
- SikaSwell S-2 expands in contact with water, and this expansion is not immediate; it may take a few hours. Avoid leaving SikaSwell S-2 submerged in standing water for an extended period (maximum 24 hours, allowing drainage).
- Do not use SikaSwell S-2 for movement joints.
- If the water level suddenly increases, the watertightness of joints will be achieved when SikaSwell S-2 has swollen.
- In a completely dry state, SikaSwell S-2 shrinks to its original dimensions before expanding again upon contact with water.
- While SikaSwell S-2 has been tested for water pressures up to 5 bar, it is not recommended for sealing against water pressures higher than 2 bar due to the limited sealing distance. For pressures exceeding 2 bar, consider using SikaFuko Swell 1 Injection Hoses or other supplementary sealing measures.
Follow these construction instructions diligently to ensure the successful application of SikaSwell S-2, maintaining the integrity and watertightness of your construction projects.
