CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS
Proper installation of the SikaBit PRO P-40-0 MG waterproofing membrane is crucial to ensure the long-term performance and water-tightness of your construction project. Follow these detailed construction instructions to achieve a successful application:
SUBSTRATE QUALITY
- Structural Strength Assessment: Before beginning the installation, ensure that the supporting structure is of sufficient structural strength to support all new and existing layers of the waterproofing build-up. In the case of roofing applications, the entire roof system must be designed to withstand wind uplift loadings.
- Substrate Preparation: The substrate surface should be uniform, firm, smooth, and free of any sharp protrusions, burrs, grease, bitumen, oil, dust, or loosely adhering particles. Utilize appropriate preparation equipment to achieve the desired substrate quality.

APPLICATION METHOD / TOOLS
- Priming: Proper priming is crucial to ensure adhesion. Apply the appropriate primer from the SikaBit P or Sika® Igolflex P range to the prepared dry surface. Follow the consumption rate recommendations for the primer and allow it to dry completely before proceeding to the next application stage. Refer to the individual Product Data Sheets for specific primer instructions.
- Alignment: Unroll the SikaBit PRO P-40-0 MG membrane and carefully align it with the intended application area. Re-roll the membrane correctly to ensure proper positioning before torching.
- Overlaps: Maintain the recommended overlap measurements to create a secure and water-tight seal. For side overlaps, ensure an overlap of 80 mm, and for end overlaps, maintain a minimum of 150 mm.
- Torching: Use a gas burner to heat both the substrate and the backing film on the underside of the membrane. As the backing film begins to melt, the membrane is ready to adhere. Roll the membrane forward, pressing it firmly against the substrate to create a strong bond.
- Safety Note: Be cautious not to over-torch the membrane, as excessive heat can damage the polyester reinforcement, making the membrane un-useable.
- Detailing: Pay special attention to all details, including internal and external corners, upstands, vent pipes, drains, and support metalwork. Each of these areas should be cut and sealed effectively to maintain a water-tight seal. Always follow the recommended guidelines and best practices for torch-applied membranes when working on details.
- Protection: Throughout the construction process, take measures to protect the installed membrane from potential damage. Ensure that ongoing site activities do not compromise the integrity of the membrane.
MAINTENANCE
To preserve the functionality of the waterproofing membrane during its lifespan, regular maintenance and inspection are essential. Consider the following:
- Periodically inspect the membrane and detailing to ensure their continued functionality.
- Check the functionality of auxiliary components such as flashings, drainage outlets, overflow pipes, and remove any debris like leaves, moss, or vegetation that may accumulate.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
- In low-temperature conditions, take care when unrolling the membrane to avoid damaging it.
- Use appropriate footwear to prevent puncturing the membrane during installation.
- Avoid applying the membrane to wet, damp, or unclean surfaces.
- Ensure you do not over-torch the membrane, as this can damage the polyester reinforcement.
- If the membrane is insufficiently heated, it can lead to reduced adhesion to the substrate, between layers, or on the overlaps. In such cases, un-bonded areas must be lifted and re-torched.
- If a seasonal symbol is printed on the roll’s label, it is advisable to use the membrane during the indicated season.
By adhering to these detailed construction instructions, you can ensure that SikaBit PRO P-40-0 MG is installed correctly and effectively, providing long-lasting water-tightness and protection for your construction project. Always consult the most up-to-date product documentation and guidelines for specific details and conditions.
