Construction Instructions

Proper installation of Sika® Hydrotite® CJ profiles is crucial to ensure its effectiveness in creating a water-tight seal within your construction joints. Follow these detailed construction instructions for a successful installation:
1. Forming Requirements:
- Form Stripping: Sika® Hydrotite® CJ profiles are installed after the form has been stripped from the first concrete pour and before the second concrete pour. Unlike some other waterstops, you do not need to split the form.
- Form Condition: Ensure that the form surface is in good condition, smooth, and free from any irregularities that might prevent proper adhesion of the profiles.
- Timing is Key: Timing is crucial. Install the profiles as close as possible to the second placement of concrete to reduce the risk of premature expansion due to exposure to rainwater or groundwater. A damp or wet environment is ideal for the hydrophilic properties of Sika® Hydrotite® to activate.
2. Splicing:
- Cutting Profiles: Straight lengths of CJ profiles should be cut square with a sharp knife or a good pair of shears. Ensure that the cuts are clean and precise.
- Adhesive Bonding: Apply several drops of a cyanoacrylate adhesive (such as Super Glue) to the cut ends of the Sika® Hydrotite® profiles.
- Joining Ends: Immediately join the ends together. Hold them in position for approximately 30-45 seconds to allow the adhesive to set. Proper alignment and bonding of the cut ends will prevent water from entering the cells of the profile.
- Miter Cuts: For flat 90° corners, miter cut the two ends at a 45° angle and bond them together in a similar manner to straight lengths.
- Bending Profiles: In cases where space permits, CJ-0725-3K and CJ-1020-2K profiles can be bent to an inside radius of approximately 2 inches, eliminating the need for splicing.
- Flat “T’s” and “X’s”: These should be made by butt splicing the legs with the use of cyanoacrylate adhesive.
- Vertical Corners and Shapes: Vertical 90° corners, vertical “T’s,” and vertical “X’s” should be butted and bonded with the cyanoacrylate adhesive. You can further enhance the splices by placing a bead of LEAKMASTER® LV-Z at the splice.
3. Bonding to Concrete:
- Surface Preparation: Before adhering Sika® Hydrotite®, remove all dust, oil, laitance, and any other contaminants from the concrete surface. The surface must be clean and dry for optimal adhesion.
- Adhesive Options: Depending on the concrete surface conditions, you have several adhesive options for bonding the profiles to the concrete:
- Adhesive-Backed Profiles: For profiles with adhesive backing, simply remove the release paper and press the profile firmly against the concrete in the desired location.
- Sika® Hydrotite® Adhesive: This adhesive can be applied to both the profile and the concrete surface. Allow it to dry until it reaches a tacky condition, and then place the profile into position. These methods work well when the concrete surfaces are smooth and dry.
- Rough Surfaces: If the concrete surface is rough due to jackhammering or extensive weathering, it should be brought to a smooth, level condition. LEAKMASTER® LV-Z, a swellable sealant, can be used for this purpose when the concrete surface is dry. Apply a sufficient bead of LEAKMASTER® LV-Z to the rough concrete to ensure a smooth, level surface. Install the Sika® Hydrotite® within 4 hours of applying LEAKMASTER® LV-Z. You can use concrete nails on vertical or overhead surfaces to hold the profile in position while the sealant cures.
- Epoxy Bonding: For leveling rough surfaces, Sika® Greenstreak® Epoxy 7300 can be used on rough, wet concrete surfaces to bond Sika® Hydrotite® profiles into position. Apply Sika® Hydrotite® to the bed of epoxy prior to final cure, typically around 30 minutes. Again, concrete nails may be used on vertical or overhead applications while the epoxy cures.
By following these detailed construction instructions, you can ensure the proper installation of Sika® Hydrotite® CJ profiles, making your construction projects more resilient against water intrusion and ensuring their long-lasting effectiveness. Always adhere to local regulations and consult the most recent Product Data Sheet for precise product data and usage recommendations in your region.
