FLINTKOTE NO3 – ELASTIC WATERPROOF EMULSION
DESCRIPTION
Shell Flintkote is a high-quality bitumen emulsion that comes in a single-pack, non-fibrated form. This stable water-borne emulsion cures to create a robust and flexible bitumen waterproofing membrane. Designed for both horizontal and vertical surfaces, it’s a versatile solution for a wide range of applications.
APPLICATION
- Waterproofing: Ideal for concrete roofs, asbestos cement roofs, exposed metal roofs, rejuvenation of asphalt roofs, retaining walls, external concrete walls, above-grade floor slabs, bathrooms, kitchens, balconies, and planter boxes. It can also be used as a non-toxic lining for water tanks.
- Insulation: Creates a vapor barrier for cold storage rooms and mushroom houses, making it a suitable option for applications in food stores.
- Concrete Protection: Safeguards concrete from carbonation, spalling, and sulfate attacks.
- Metal Protection: Acts as a protective coating against corrosion on pipes, structural steelworks, and other metallic equipment.
- Timber End Protection: Seals freshly cut timber surfaces to prevent excessive water loss through tree wounds.
ADVANTAGES
Shell Flintkote stands out with its remarkable advantages:
- Easy Application: Can be applied by brush, trowel, or sprayer, making the application process a breeze.
- Seamless and Lap-Free Membrane: Forms a seamless and lap-free membrane over the substrate, ensuring complete protection.
- Water-Based and Non-Toxic: It’s environmentally friendly and safe to use.
- Flexible Waterproofing Barrier: Cures to create a flexible and resilient waterproofing barrier across a wide range of temperatures.
- No Flow or Sagging: Even on vertical surfaces, Shell Flintkote maintains its integrity, preventing the migration of water underneath.
- Excellent Adhesion: Strong adhesion to the substrate keeps water at bay, even on damp surfaces like green concrete.

CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS

Surface Preparation:
- Before applying Shell Flintkote, ensure that the surfaces to be treated are clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, moss, and loose materials.
- For porous surfaces like concrete or brick, it’s essential to prime the surface to improve adhesion. You have two options for priming:
- Mix Shell Flintkote with water in a 1:1 ratio and apply it as a primer.
- Alternatively, you can use Shell Flintkote PF-4 Bitumen Paint for priming.
- The coverage for priming should be approximately 0.1-0.15 liter/m2. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding with Shell Flintkote 3 application.
- For metal surfaces, prime with Shell Flintkote PF-4 Bitumen Paint or Shell Flintkote Penetration Primer in the same manner as mentioned for porous surfaces.
Membrane Application:
- Start by thoroughly stirring the Shell Flintkote emulsion before use to ensure a consistent mixture.
- Shell Flintkote can be applied using a roller, brush, or sprayer. When applying by sprayer, ensure proper equipment calibration to achieve the recommended coverage.
- A minimum of two coats is typically required for optimal waterproofing. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. It’s crucial to apply each coat at right angles to the previous coat to ensure uniform coverage.
- Shell Flintkote usually cures within 24 hours of application, depending on temperature and humidity conditions.
- For areas that may be subject to additional stress or wear, consider reinforcing the membrane with Shell Flintkote FG-4 open woven glass fabric or an equivalent material. Place the fabric between the coats of Shell Flintkote to enhance durability.
- During and after application, protect the surface from rain and frost until the membrane is fully cured to prevent any damage or defects.
Coverage:
- The coverage rate may vary based on the specific surface conditions and application method. However, as a general guideline, anticipate a typical coverage of about 1.5 liters/m2 for a two-coat application.
Cleaning of Tools:
- To maintain your tools in good condition, it’s crucial to clean them immediately after use. Use water to clean tools if the product is still wet.
- If the Shell Flintkote 3 has dried on your tools, you can clean them with kerosene or white spirit to remove any residual emulsion.
Storage:
- Proper storage of Shell Flintkote 3 is essential for maintaining its effectiveness. Store the product in its original sealed containers in a covered area.
- Maintain storage temperatures between 5°C and 40°C to prevent freezing conditions, which can affect the product’s performance.
By following these detailed construction instructions, you can ensure that Shell Flintkote is applied correctly and effectively, providing reliable waterproofing and protection for your construction projects. Proper surface preparation, priming, and careful application will help maximize the performance and longevity of this outstanding bitumen emulsion.
