• Packaging: SikaBit W-15 is available in 1.0 m x 20 m rolls, packaged on cardboard coils and wrapped in woven plastic bags. Each roll weighs 50 kg, and there are 25 rolls per pallet.
• Appearance/Color: This sheet membrane boasts laminated PE film reinforcement on the inside and silver release liners on both sides. Its classic black color features white product name and logo printing on the release liner.
• Shelf Life: With a shelf life of 12 months from the date of production, you can rest easy knowing it’s ready when you are.
• Storage Conditions: Store SikaBit W-15 in dry conditions between +5°C to +35°C. Keep rolls in their original packaging, stored vertically, and away from direct sunlight, rain, snow, and ice.
• Effective Thickness: 1.5 mm (± 10 %) (ASTM D3767 A)

CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS

Preparation and Surface Inspection

• Before you begin the installation, make sure the substrate is clean, smooth, and free from any irregularities. Inspect the surface for any sharp objects, protrusions, or debris, and remove them to create a smooth base for membrane installation.

Safety Precautions

• Ensure you are wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while working with SikaBit® W-15. This typically includes gloves, safety glasses, and appropriate work attire.

Tools and Materials

Gather the necessary tools and materials for the installation:

• SikaBit® W-15 Waterproofing Membrane
• SikaBit®-1 Bonding Slurry (2-3 kg/m2)
• Roller for pressing membrane
• Cutting tools (e.g., utility knife)
• Sika® Primer (if required)
• Broom or brush for surface cleaning
• Measuring tape
• Water hose (for saturating concrete)
• Roller or brush for applying bonding slurry

PRE-Application

For foundations and base slabs.

• Prepare the Substrate: Ensure the cement concrete substrate is smooth and solid. There should be no standing water on the surface.
• Unroll SikaBit® W-15: Carefully unroll the membrane onto the prepared substrate. Ensure it is properly aligned.
• Overlap Edges: Overlap the long edges of the membrane by a minimum of 80 mm (approximately 3 inches) and firmly press them together using a roller.
• Overlap Short Edges: Repeat the same overlapping process for the short edges. Ensure the overlaps are staggered for added strength and watertightness.
• Apply Bonding Slurry: After removing the release liner from the membrane, apply a modified cement concrete screed to all horizontal areas. Ensure that it adheres to the membrane effectively.

POST-Application

For walls and podium slabs.

• Prepare the Substrate: Saturate the concrete surface with water using a water hose. Remove any protrusions and ensure that the concrete surface is clean and free from contaminants.
• Apply Bonding Slurry: Using a roller or brush, apply SikaBit®-1 Bonding Slurry (2-3 kg/m2) to the substrate where you plan to install SikaBit® W-15.
• Unroll SikaBit® W-15: Unroll the SikaBit® W-15 membrane over the fresh slurry, ensuring proper alignment.
• Overlap Edges: Overlap the long edges of the membrane by a minimum of 80 mm (approximately 3 inches). Press them together firmly using a roller.
• Overlap Short Edges: Repeat the overlapping process for the short edges, ensuring staggered overlaps for added strength and watertightness.

Additional Considerations

• Temperature: Always apply SikaBit® W-15 at temperatures above +15 °C.
• UV Exposure: Remember that SikaBit® W-15 is not UV-stabilized. Avoid using it in areas where it will be permanently exposed to weathering.
• Protective Layer: The installed membrane must be protected against mechanical damage with a suitable protective layer.
• Bond Strength: It takes a few days for the bond strength between the membrane and the concrete substrate to fully develop. Manual testing of the bond strength, such as a cross-cut peel-off test, is recommended before backfilling, especially in case of low ambient temperatures.
