CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS

Ensuring a watertight seal with Sika Waterbar® V VN is crucial for the longevity and integrity of your concrete structures. Follow these detailed construction instructions to achieve a secure and durable installation:
1. Fixing to Formwork:
- Purpose: Sika Waterbar® V VN should be securely placed within the split formwork or shuttering, with a focus on central positioning into the stopends. This is primarily applicable to construction joints and movement joints where nominal movement is expected, such as in basement or retaining walls.
- Procedure:
- Before placing the formwork, ensure it is clean and free from debris that might compromise the seal.
- Lay the Sika Waterbar® V VN into the formwork, ensuring it is centered as much as possible.
- The waterbar should be positioned to allow for easy attachment to steel reinforcement in the next step.
2. Fixing to Reinforcement:
- Purpose: Pre-punched eyelets on the outer flanges of the profiles simplify the attachment of waterbars to steel reinforcement, ensuring they remain in place during the concreting process.
- Procedure:
- Securely tie the waterbar to the steel reinforcement using tie wires, ensuring that it is adequately anchored and will not shift during the concrete pouring process.
3. Placing Concrete (First Stage):
- Purpose: The Sika Waterbar® V VN will perform its function effectively only when both sides are well-embedded in the concrete. Avoid honeycombing by carefully vibrating the concrete.
- Procedure:
- Carefully pour and place the concrete into the formwork, ensuring that the waterbar remains in its designated position.
- To achieve the best results, make sure the consistency of the concrete is neither too plastic nor too stiff, and that the aggregate is well-graded.
4. Placing Concrete (Second Stage):
- Purpose: During the second stage, when removing the formwork near the Sika Waterbar® V VN, it’s essential to inspect and prepare the waterbar for the final seal.
- Procedure:
- When removing formwork near the waterbar, do so carefully to avoid damaging it or displacing it from its position.
- Thoroughly inspect the end of the Sika Waterbar® V VN for any honeycombing on the stop-end and repair if necessary.
- Remove any hardened concrete remnants adhering to the waterbar from the first concrete stage.
- Follow the procedure for placing fresh concrete as you did in the first stage.
5. Welding:
- Purpose: Welding is necessary for a secure and long-lasting joint between waterbar segments. On-site welding can be undertaken using a Sika electric welding knife.
- Procedure:
- Heat both ends of the joint simultaneously on the faces of the welding knife until an even, molten bead of PVC appears.
- Withdraw the welding knife, and immediately push the Sika Waterbar® V VN segments together to create a strong bond.
- Hold the joint rigid until the plastic cools down and solidifies.
- Carefully inspect the joint for any gaps or imperfections. Redo the welding if necessary.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
- Level Differences, Bends, and Junctions: Before placing the Sika Waterbar® V VN, carefully consider any variations in the construction, such as level differences, bends, junctions, and other factors that could affect its effectiveness.
By following these construction instructions diligently, you can ensure that Sika Waterbar® V VN effectively seals your concrete construction joints, providing long-lasting protection against water infiltration. Always prioritize safety and follow recommended procedures for the best results.
